Huge Water Reserves Found All Over Mars

New NASA images show layers of ice peeking out of eroded cliffs—a potential boon for future humans on the red planet.

At sites across the midsection of Mars, scientists have found layers of water ice buried mere feet beneath the red planet’s surface. The discovery adds crucial detail to Mars’s geologic history, and it may shape how future humans on Mars get their water.

"This is a new window into ground ice on Mars," says Colin Dundas, the U.S. Geological Survey geologist who co-discovered the ice layers.

SCIENTISTS DISCOVER CLEAN WATER ICE JUST BELOW MARS' SURFACE

Locked away beneath the surface of Mars are vast quantities of water ice. But the properties of that ice—how pure it is, how deep it goes, what shape it takes—remain a mystery to planetary geologists. Those things matter to mission planners, too: Future visitors to Mars, be they short-term sojourners or long-term settlers, will need to understand the planet's subsurface ice reserves if they want to mine it for drinking, growing crops, or converting into hydrogen for fuel.

Trouble is, dirt, rocks, and other surface-level contaminants make it hard to study the stuff. Mars landers can dig or drill into the first few centimeters of the planet's surface, and radar can give researchers a sense of what lies tens-of-meters below the surface. But the ice content of the geology in between—the first 20 meters or so—is largely uncharacterized.

Fortunately, land erodes. Forget radar and drilling robots: Locate a spot of land laid bare by time, and you have a direct line of sight on Mars' subterranean layers—and any ice deposited there.

Now, scientists have discovered such a site. In fact, with the help of HiRISE, a powerful camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, they've found several.

Kάτσε να τους βρούν στα αλήθεια πρώτα. Μέχρι στιγμής η απαρχή της ζωής μέσα απο βιοχημικές διεργασίες δεν έχει αποδειχθεί. Δεν αμφισβητώ την δυνατότητα δημιουργίας ζωής απο το τίποτα (διαφορετικά έχουμε αλυσίδα παραδόξων, πχ, πως δημιουργήθηκε ο Θεός -κάτι πολύ πιο πολύπλοκο απο ένα κύτταρο- απο το τίποτε; Αν προϋπήρχε απο πάντα, γιατί να μην προϋπήρχε απο πάντα και ένας μηχανισμός δημιουργίας ζωής;), αλλά μέχρι να βρούμε οργανισμούς σε άλλο πλανήτη, δεν μπορούμε να ρίξουμε στην πυρά με ήσυχη την συνείδησή μας όσους το αμφισβητούν

Βρήκαν μεθάνιο, για να παραχθεί το μεθάνιο πρέπει να υπάρχουν μικροοργανισμοί. Τώρα η αποστολή Σκαπαλιέρι το 2020 που θα φτάσει στον πλανήτη Άρη, θα κάνει με το τρυπάνι μέχρι και 2 μέτρα τρύπες να δούνε τα συστατικά του υπεδάφους. Πάντως έτσι όπως την βλέπω της αποστολή της ESA, είναι πολύ φτωχή, δεν ξέρω αν τα καταφέρει εις πέρας με το ExoMars.

The Mars Science Laboratory mission is a NASA project that launched on November 26, 2011, the Curiosity rover, a nuclear-powered robotic vehicle, bearing instruments designed to assess past and present habitability conditions on Mars.[239][240] The Curiosity rover landed on Mars on Aeolis Palus in Gale Crater, near Aeolis Mons (a.k.a. Mount Sharp),[241][242][243][244] on August 6, 2012.[245][246][247]

On 16 December 2014, NASA reported the Curiosity rover detected a "tenfold spike", likely localized, in the amount of methane in the Martian atmosphere. Sample measurements taken "a dozen times over 20 months" showed increases in late 2013 and early 2014, averaging "7 parts of methane per billion in the atmosphere." Before and after that, readings averaged around one-tenth that level.[141][142] In addition, low levels of chlorobenzene (C
6H
5Cl), were detected in powder drilled from one of the rocks, named "Cumberland", analyzed by the Curiosity rover.

Mission objectives
The scientific objectives, in order of priority, are:[51]

to search for possible biosignatures of past Martian life.
to characterize the water and geochemical distribution as a function of depth in the shallow subsurface.
to study the surface environment and identify hazards to future manned missions to Mars.
to investigate the planet's subsurface and deep interior to better understand the evolution and habitability of Mars.
achieve incremental steps ultimately culminating in a sample return flight.
The technological objectives to develop are:

landing of large payloads on Mars.
to exploit solar electric power on the surface of Mars.
to access the subsurface with a drill able to collect samples down to a depth of 2 metres (6.6 ft)
to develop surface exploration capability using a rover.

Το ενδεχόμενο αυτό που αποκαλείται "Θεός" να είναι κάτι που ο ανθρώπινος εγκέφαλος αδυνατεί -εκ φύσεως- να αντιληφθεί στις πραγματικές του διαστάσεις, το έχουμε σκεφτεί καθόλου;
