Two of India's biggest businesses are moving away from Russia, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi refrains from taking a tough stance against Moscow over the war in Ukraine.

Tata Steel, one of the largest steelmakers in India, said on Wednesday that it has "taken a conscious decision to stop doing business with Russia."

The company, which is also one of the biggest steel producers in Europe, said it has a plan in place to ensure minimal disruption to its business...

Its announcement comes just days after Infosys (INFY), one of India's largest tech companies, said that it has started moving its operations out of Russia.

"Given what is going on in the region, we have started to transition all of our work from our centers in Russia to our center outside Russia," Infosys CEO Salil Parekh told reporters last week.

"We are also providing some assistance for re-skilling of individuals that are displaced and, seeing as they move to other geographies if they can work in some of our locations in eastern Europe," he added.

The halting of operations by the Indian corporate giants comes at a time when New Delhi is reportedly stepping up its purchases of Russian oil, now trading at a heavy discount because of Western sanctions.

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues in its second month, most global retailers have either closed down their operations in the country or exited Russia for good. Brands like Zara, H&M, Mango, Nike and Ikea are among hundreds that have stopped their business in Russia.

Amid the exodus, Indian retailers have sensed an opportunity for expanding their markets. Companies like Maspar, a home furnishing retailer, and Killer Jeans, a fashion brand, are looking to open up shop in Russia, reported The Economic Times.

NEW DELHI

Reliance Industries Ltd., operator of the world’s biggest refining complex, may avoid buying Russian fuels for its plants following Western sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine, a senior company official said.

“Even if we can source some of the feeds [from Russia], probably we will be out of it because of the sanctions,” Rajesh Rawat, senior vice-president and business head cracker, told an industry event on March 16.

Reliance buys Urals crude and straight run fuel oil for its refineries from Russia. The private refiner mostly buys its petrochemical feedstock from the Middle East and the United States.

Sanctions on Russia have prompted many companies and countries to shun its oil, depressing Russian crude to record discount levels.

Mr. Rawat said in India most of the oil supplies from Russia are going to the State-run companies.

“So probably, those feed streams will still continue, or may have a lesser impact compared to the private sector players. Because we deal with banks, and also even if we can source some of the feeds [from Russia], probably we will be out of it because of the sanctions,” Mr. Rawat told the Asia Refining and Petrochemical Summit.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on Feb. 24, country’s top refiner Indian Oil Corp. has bought 3 million barrels of Russian Urals crude and Hindustan Petroleum has bought 2 million barrels of the oil through tenders.
