Background

The Criminal Code of March 1950 states that abortion is allowed in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea “for important reasons”. The particulars of these reasons are not specified in the Code. A person who performs an abortion in the absence of an “important reason” is subject to up to three years’ imprisonment. However, a woman who consents to the performance of an abortion or who induces her own abortion is not held criminally responsible.

Although information on the application of the abortion provisions of the Criminal Code in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is difficult to obtain, reports suggest that abortion is permitted virtually on request, up to the seventh month of pregnancy, owing to the broad interpretation of the phrase “important reasons”. It has been reported that abortion is performed at provincial maternity hospitals free of charge.

Nα πούμε καπου εδώ ότι η χώρα έχει total fertility rate: 1.95 children born/woman (2017 est.), το ίδιο με την Ιρλανδία (1.92 children born/woman (2015 est.))

Στην Ιρλανδία το ποσοστό αυτό έχει να κάνει με την κοινωνική-επιδοματική πολιτική, και όχι με τον νόμο εκτρώσεων.

Οι χώρες με το μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό στην Ευρώπη είναι η Γαλλία (1.96), η Σουηδία (1,85), η Ιρλανδία (1.92), η Ισλανδία (1,80) και η Βρετανία (1,80). Απ αυτές μόνο η Ιρλανδία έχει νόμο κατά της εκτρωσης.

Πολωνία και Ισπανία έχουν και αυτές πιο αυστηρούς σχετικούς νόμους (όχι τόσο ταλιμπανικούς όσο η Ιρλανδία) αλλά τα ποσοστά τους είναι στο 1,32 και 1,33 αντίστοιχα.

All women who seek to end a pregnancy must appear before a three-member committee to state their case, but 98 percent of requests are approved. Women under the age of 20 or over the age of 40 were also previously eligible for subsidized abortions, regardless of the reason.
