Legislation sponsored by Putin’s government has been submitted to parliament to raise the retirement age to 65 from 60 for men, and to 63 from 55 for women.

Since the government announced the proposed reform, opinion polls have shown that Putin’s popularity rating has been slipping. There have also been protests around the country against the proposed higher retirement age.

Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov points out rightly that the popularity of the governing parties has fallen 12 percent in the past few weeks, while the Communists have gained 5 percent. The latter aim to stage a nationwide referendum on the government's proposal. A petition against the plans has already been signed by 2.6 million people.
