A Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) F-15 multirole fighter was “intercepted” by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) while flying over northern Yemen on 21 March, but managed to complete its mission, Colonel Turki al-Maliki, the spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, said later that day.

The Saudi Press Agency cited Col Maliki as saying the missile was launched from Sadah airport at 1548 h local time (1245 GMT), but the F-15 was able to “deal with the source of fire and return safe to base”.

He said the incident was further evidence that Iran is supplying weapons to the Yemeni rebel group Ansar Allah (the Houthis) because it was not part of Yemen’s pre-war air defence inventory.

Ansar Allah claimed it hit a coalition aircraft over Sadah with an SAM on the same day. It supported its claim by releasing video footage showing what appeared to be an R-27T air-to-air missile being fired from a ground launcher and apparently hitting an aircraft that was then seen trailing a plume, but not crashing.

The infrared guided R-27T is the standard medium-range air-to-air missile for the MiG-29, a type used by the pre-war Yemeni Air Force.

It has been known since that Ansar Allah was reroling R-27s as SAMs since at least November 2017, when the Saudi-led coalition released aerial surveillance images of one on a vehicle-mounted launcher.

Video hit social media yesterday showing an R-27 being launched from the ground against a high-flying jet. Houthi rebels claim the aircraft targeted was a Saudi F-15S and that it shot it down, but we still don't have any official confirmation of this being true, and considering how the Saudis have dealt with these incidents in the past, we may never receive such a report. A streaking fireball can be seen in the video which points to the aircraft at least being severely damaged in the engagement.

In recent weeks the Saudi-led coalition posted aerial surveillance images of a Vympel R-27 turned SAM mounted on a truck. The image is troubling for coalition aircrews as the R-27 is a medium-range air-to-air weapon, and the P model, like the ones the Houthi rebels are putting to use, use passive infrared homing.

This means that if the targeted aircraft isn't equipped with missile launch detectors, and only the Saudi's newest and most advanced F-15s are, the F-15SA, and the aircrew does not spot the missile as it ascends towards them, they would have no indication of an impending attack until it is too late.

The missile's high speed also makes reaction time highly limited, as you can see in the video. In this case the missile's incoming vector was from below and behind the jet on its left side, meaning it was likely not seen nor detected before it detonated very near the targeted aircraft.

There is also intelligence that shows short-range R-73 air-to-air missiles have also been adapted into SAMs. Employing one of these weapons would be more challenging due to its more limited range, which is exacerbated by the fact that it is launched from the ground and without a booster, making what is already a limited-range air-to-air missile much more limited in terms of reach.

Kronstadt Technologies unveiled the first Russian medium altitude long endurance (MALE) class unmanned aerial system (UAS) prototype, during the MAKS 2017 airshow.

Dubbed the Orion-E, 1 ton class surveillance UAV have been undergoing flight testing in the country since last year and had been revealed earlier through grainy images.

The UAV has an external design similar to the Thales WatchKeeper UAS, albeit with a different fuselage cross section.

With a wingspan of 16 m (52.5ft), the Orion-E is capable of automatic take off and landing, and fly continuously for 24 hours, carrying a surveillance payloads of up to 200 kg.

The fuselage is 8 m long and have high-aspect ratio wings with a V-tail. It can reach a max altitude of 7,500 m and have a range of 250 km.





Similar to the General Dynamics MQ-9 Reaper, forward and the canted main landing gear can be retracted into the fuselage. Orion-E is possibly powered by the 100 hp Saturn 36MT turboprop, which also powers the Indian DRDO Tapas UAV.

The Orion-E can be configured to carry various surveillance payloads including a forward looking infra-red (FLIR) turret, Synthetic aperture radar and high resolution cameras,

According to Kronstadt, the UAS is intended for export market and is expected to be ready by 2020. A more capable and heavier version in the 5-7 ton weight class is also planned to be developed as a follow on, which will have combat capabilities.

DSEI is one of the world’s largest arms fairs, playing host to thousands of companies and government delegations from around the world. The fair sparked two weeks of protests, with campaigners attempting to disrupt the setting up of the fair by blocking the road to the exhibition centre and blocking trucks bringing weapons to the fair to display. Several protesters managed to bypass security and get inside the fair (see here and here). Anarchist hackers breached Clarion’s cyber security and leaked documents containing commercial, logistical and security information intended for Clarion’s customers.

Κατά 10% αυξήθηκε την τελευταία 5ετία το παγκόσμιο εμπόριο όπλων σύμφωνα με τη νέα έκθεση του Ινστιτούτου Ερευνών για την Ειρήνη. Το ένα τρίτο όλων των όπλων και οπλικών συστημάτων κατέληξε σε χώρες της Μέσης Ανατολής.
Μολονότι τα τελευταία χρόνια υπήρξε έντονος δημόσιος διάλογος στη δυτική Ευρώπη και τη βόρεια Αμερική για την ανάγκη μείωσης των πωλήσεων όπλων στις εστίες κρίσης, «ΗΠΑ και ευρωπαϊκές χώρες παραμένουν κύριοι εξαγωγείς» προς χώρες της Εγγύς και Μέσης Ανατολής, επισημαίνει ο ειδικός της SIPRI Πίτερ Βέζεμαν. Περισσότερα όπλα πουλήθηκαν όχι μόνον στη Μέση Ανατολή αλλά και στην Ασία και την Ωκεανία. Αντιθέτως οι εξαγωγές μειώθηκαν -εν μέρει και λόγω οικονομικής κρίσης- προς την Αφρική, την Αμερική αλλά και την Ευρώπη.
Οι ΗΠΑ κατάφεραν να αυξήσουν τις εξαγωγές τους κατά 25% περίπου, προμηθεύοντας με όπλα και οπλικά συστήματα 98 χώρες του κόσμου. Σύμφωνα με τους ειδικούς του σουηδικού ινστιτούτου, οι Αμερικανοί εκμεταλλεύονται το εμπόριο όπλων ως εργαλείο εξωτερικής πολιτικής, προκειμένου να συνάπτουν στρατηγικές συμμαχίες. Το 50% περίπου των αμερικανικών όπλων πουλήθηκε στη Μέση Ανατολή.

Τα πακιστανικά μαχητικά JF-17 αποκτούν κινεζικό ραντάρ KLJ-7A APAR


Το μαχητικό JF-17, γνωστό ως FC-1 στην Κίνα, που αποτελεί κοινό εγχείρημα με το Πακιστάν και υπηρετεί στην πακιστανική αεροπορία θα αποκτήσει το κινεζικό ραντάρ KLJ-7A APAR (Active Phased Array Radar / ενεργού διάταξης φάσης), αναβαθμίζοντας τις δυνατότητές του.







«Το νέο ραντάρ θα αναβαθμίσει δραματικά τις δυνατότητες του μαχητικού. Το μαχητικό θα μπορεί να «δει» σε μεγαλύτερες αποστάσεις και να εντοπίσει εχθρικά αεροσκάφη πριν αυτό εντοπιστεί από αυτά ώστε να μπορεί να βάλλει και πρώτο εναντίον τους. Επίσης έχει μεγάλη αντοχή στις ηλεκτρονικές παρεμβολές», ανέφερε Κινέζος τεχνικός.

Το ραντάρ αναπτύσσεται από τη Nanjing Research Institute of Electronics Technology, που αποτελεί μέρος της κρατικής China Electronics Technology Group Corp. Ειδικεύεται στην ανάπτυξη και κατασκευή ραντάρ και έχει προμηθεύσει πάνω από 20 χώρες σε Ασία και Αφρική.

Το μαχητικό JF-17 είναι ένα ελαφρύ αεροσκάφος που αναπτύσσεται από κοινού από την Aviation Industry Corp of China και την Pakistan Aeronautical Complex. Το μαχητικό αποτελεί τη ραχοκοκαλιά τα πακιστανικής αεροπορίας και φαίνεται πως έχει αποκτηθεί και από τη Μιανμάρ.

Η Κίνα παρέλαβε τους πρώτους S-400

Η Κίνα έχει παραλάβει την πρώτη παρτίδα των ρωσικών Α/Α συστημάτων μακράς ακτίνας S-400, αναφέρει το «TASS».

Για τη μεταφορά του φορτίου από τη Ρωσία στην Κίνα χρησιμοποιήθηκαν δύο φορτηγά πλοία. Ένα μέρος των υλικών, που υπέστη ζημία κατά τη μεταφορά, θα αντικατασταθεί με την άφιξη τρίτου εμπορικού πλοίου.

Τα υλικά που παραδόθηκαν περιλαμβάνουν σταθμό ελέγχου, ραντάρ, εκτοξευτές, βλήματα και λοιπό εξοπλισμό. Η παράδοση του φορτίου του τρίτου πλοίου θα συμβεί το καλοκαίρι. Η κινεζική αγορά των S-400 επιβεβαιώθηκε το 2015. Το σύστημα εμφανίζεται ικανό να αντιμετωπίζει αντίπαλα αεροσκάφη σε απόσταση έως 400km. Συστήματα του τύπου έχουν αναπτυχθεί στη Συρία για την προστασία των ρωσικών στρατιωτικών δυνάμεων που επιχειρούν στην χώρα.

Πτωση CH-53E και AV-8B Harrier

Βαρύ μεταφορικό ελικόπτερο CH-53E του Σώματος των Πεζοναυτών κατέπεσε χθες σε περιοχή κοντά στα σύνορα με το Μεξικό στην Νότια Καλιφόρνια σε απόσταση 10 χιλιομέτρων από το Πλάστερ Σίτι, ενώ επιχειρούσε σε εκπαιδευτική πτήση από τον αεροναύσταθμο El Cetro. Δεν υπήρξαν επιζώντες ανάμεσα στα τέσσερα μέλη του πληρώματος.

Αμερικανικό AV-8B Harrier των Αμερικανών Πεζοναυτών (U.S. Marine Corps) κατέπεσε και συνετρίβη λίγο μετά την απογείωσή του από αεροδρόμιο στο Djibouti. Το αεροσκάφος άνησε σε αεροπορικό Απόσπασμα τοποθετημένο στο Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron One Six Two, ή όπως το γνωρίζουμε οι περισσότεροι VMM-162. Το τελευταίο είναι μέρος της Μονάδας 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, η οποία βρίσκεται στην Ανατολική Αφρική για την Άσκηση Alligator Dagger.

Σύμφωνα με αναφορές, το αεροσκάφος μετά την απογείωση «σήκωσε» απότομα το ρύγχος του, και αμέσως μετά ο πιλότος εγκατέλειψε. Ο τελευταίος είναι καλά στην υγεία του καθώς μάρτυρες τον είδαν να περπατά για να μπει στο ασθενοφόρο που θα τον μετέφερε στο νοσοκομείο.
